Advent 2009 | A&B Catholic Youth Service

[sinners | december fifteenth]

CONNECT. . .

Here is a little bit from today's Gospel reading at Mass. Jesus is telling some people off...

'Tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the Kingdom of God before you. John the Baptist came, and you refused to believe him, even though he was a good man. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes did!' [Matthew 21:30]

One thing that we talk about a lot in the Church is the idea of Sin. This is where we do something wrong, which puts us further away from God and further away from the ones we love.

Jesus gets that we all mess up from time to time, but what he's saying is that it's about learning from our mistakes. It's not about always being perfect. The tax collectors and the prostitutes changed their ways. The people Jesus was talking to didn't!

REFLECT. . .

Advent is a time of preparation. This means that it's a good chance to take a look at ourselves and change the things about us that aren't quite right. Today, ask yourself this:

Am I committing any sins that I know I shouldn't?

Have I done anything lately that has hurt somebody?

What can I do this Advent to make myself a better person, and to get a little bit closer to God?

PRAY. . .

Loving Father,

You can heal any wound and you can mend any heart.

I ask you to look into my heart this Advent, and to patch up the things that aren't quite right.

Give me the wisdom to see where I am going wrong, and give me the strength and the love to put it right.

Amen.
