Advent 2009 | A&B Catholic Youth Service

[greatness | december tenth]

CONNECT. . .

In today's Gospel reading at Mass, Jesus talks about John the Baptist and he talks about what it means to be great.

John the Baptist was great because he had an important job, and because he did it well.

John prepared the way for Jesus and told the world that he was coming.

REFLECT. . .

What does it mean to be great?

There are many people we remember during Advent who are great, but none of them were rich or powerful. None of them had lots of people to command, or important offices to hold, or impressive places to live. They were all great because they did the things they had been asked to do with great love.

We live in a world today that tells us what it means to be great. To win the X-Factor, or to drive a sports car, or to be mobbed by crowds of people asking for autographs.

The people we focus on in Advent, like Mary, Joseph and John the Baptist, show us a different kind of greatness.

PRAY. . .

Loving Father,

Help me not to be great in the eyes of the world, but in my heart, and in the hearts of those I love.

Help me not to be great by having a famous name, but by asking the names of others and showing them I care.

Help me not to be great by what I can earn, but by the love and peace I can give.

Amen.
