Advent 2009 | A&B Catholic Youth Service

[compassion | december fifth]

CONNECT. . .

In today's Gospel we see how Jesus reacted to a huge crowd of people:

'..he felt sorry for them, because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd..' [Matthew 9:36]

The Gospel goes on to say that Jesus got his Apostles together and set them to work helping the people.

This is what we call compassion. It's the ability to see somebody in need and to be moved to help them.

REFLECT. . .

Compassion doesn't come from a sense of duty, and it doesn't come from a need to trying score points or to earn something.

If we have compassion, we recognise that people are important, and we recognise that if they're suffering, it's just not right.

We recognise that it could just as easily be us.

We recognise that we can't call ourselves human, unless it saddens us to see other human beings in need.

PRAY. . .

Loving Father,

If I am ever in need, I ask that you will send somebody to my side, to give me comfort and help.

When I see others in need, help me to do the same for them. Send me to their assistance, just as you might one day send them to mine.

In all things, let my eyes be open to the needs of my brothers and sisters. Let me greet them with love, and treat them with tender care.

Amen.
