Advent 2009 | A&B Catholic Youth Service

[angels | december nineteenth]

CONNECT. . .

Today's Gospel focuses on a man called Zechariah. Zechariah was a priest and was the father of John the Baptist.

The Gospel tells us that one day when he was carrying out his priestly duties an Angel came to visit him. The angel told him that he and his wife Elizabeth would soon have a baby.

One of the most striking things about this Gospel is the words the Angel used when greeted Zechariah. He said:

'Zechariah, do not be afraid. Your prayer has been heard.' [Luke 1:13]

Zechariah and Elizabeth thought they would never be blessed with children. They prayed and prayed, and God answered their prayer!

REFLECT. . .

I often pray, but sometimes it feels useless. It feels like it's not going anywhere. Can you hear me, Lord...?

God promises us that every prayer is heard, and he tells us that every prayer is answered.

Prayers might not be answered in the way that we expect, but they are never ignored.

God hears our prayers, and he sends his angels to protect and encourage us.

PRAY. . .

Loving Father,

Send your angels to protect and surround me.

When I feel low, remind me that I can always turn to you in my heart. In the most secret part of my heart, you are there beside me.

May I always remember that your angels are with me.

May I always be an angel to those who need my help.

Amen.
